Our apprentice electricians serve in a Pennsylvania State approved five-year program. They receive on the job training, as well as 800 hours of classroom/lab instruction (at a minimum) in all aspects of the electrical trade.
Along with all of the building trades, IBEW Local 56 offer apprenticeships upgraded courses in new codes and the latest technologies are constantly being incorporated into the classrooms. Our members become well trained in every aspect of the electrical construction industry, which make them desirable employees.
APPRENTICESHIP AND HIS/HER COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION -
An apprenticeship combines on-the-job and classroom training. This allows you, as the apprentice, to actually earn while you learn. As an apprentice you will work year-round for electrical contractors and attend classroom sessions during the academic year. As you learn by doing, you are paid directly by the contractor with which you are employed.
Apprentices will have to work during the day, a 40 hour work week, and attend school during the evening. This would be for two nights a week, 3 hours each night. School runs from the beginning of September to the end of May. Local 56 has classrooms located inside the union hall. Instructors use the National Standard Curriculum sent forth by the Electrical Training Alliance.
The finest and most highly trained electrical workers in the country receive their training through IBEW Local 56's Joint Apprenticeship Committee (J.A.C.) utilizing the standardized education programs developed by the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Electrical Industry. Providing the highest level of training through the support of our partners.
An individual who can show that they meet the conditions listed herein, after making application for apprenticeship, will be afforded an oral interview by the J.A.C. If interviewed, the applicant will be listed among those applicants qualified for selection for a period of two calendar years from the date of interview.
